Nothing On The Mainline

by John Vanek

/

about

I've spent a lot of times on trains, not least when I used to busk on the London Underground. So it's not surprising that the persona of a train and a train line should arise from my subconscious to inspire a song. This is it.

lyrics

There's nothing on the mainline
Nothing on the train
There's nothing to change
Nothing stays the same

There's nothing to break
There's nothing to mend
There's nothing to keep
There's nothing to send

There's people in the country
People in the town
Be nice to them on the way up
You meet 'em on the way down

Well there's nothing to defend
Nothing to protect
Except your reputation
And your self-respect
And your self-respect

There's nothing for your sister
Nothing for your brother
There's nothing for your mother
Nothing for your lover
Nothing for your lover

Well there's plenty to protest
There's plenty to demand
But only a higher power
Can give you a command
Give you command
Give you a command
