Down and Out

about

Down and Out is a song about that feeling of alienation we probably all get from time to time. It's a warm song that embraces alienation. I wrote the song at a particularly gruelling time working in a very well-known retail department store in Kensington, London. Not long after I left that job I signed up as a London underground or tube busker. People I used to work with would give me money.

lyrics

Things can only get better
When you feel so down and out
Things can only get better when you feel so down and out
Why don't you get some heavy rest?
Deep down you know
It's for the best

Things can only get better
When you feel so down
So down and out

Things can only go up
When you feel so out and down
Things can only go up
When you feel so out and down

Why don't you get some heavy rest?
Deep down you know
That you are blessed

Things can only get better
When you feel so down
So down and out

Peel yourself an orange
Peel yourself a grape
Life's a bowl of milk
Give yourself a shake

You had a bad dose of ambition
It's all behind you now
It's all in remission

Why don't you get some heavy rest?
Deep down you know
That things are for the best

Things can only get better
When you feel so down
So down and out
